Ostrich Spey Feathers were developed by us to replace Rhea. Rhea is difficult to source, especially in white, varies significantly in quality and has in general shorter fibres. These Ostrich Spey feathers are great for large “leggy” patterns, Intruders, large saltwater shrimp patterns like the ones used at Tapam Lodge, Single wing stinger flies like our Egg-sucking Spey Stinger and Pink Spey Stinger and as an economical alternative for Rhea. These Ostrich Spey are processed and packaged in Smithers, BC. Great care is taken to achieve a result as close to a Rhea feather as possible. In order to achieve this the feather needs to be de-barbed (fluff removed). This burns the feather a bit. For best tying results wet the feather before you start tying with it. The fibres will become very flexible and mobile. The fibres are very strong and will very likely outlast other parts of the fly.
