The Green Frances is a classic and highly effective salmon and steelhead fly — a variation of the famous Francespattern originally tied in Iceland. It’s designed to imitate shrimp or other small crustaceans that Atlantic salmon feed on, and it’s particularly deadly in clear or slightly colored water conditions.

Pattern Overview

  • Origin: Iceland (Frances pattern by Peter Deane, 1960s)

  • Style: Shrimp imitation / Salmon fly

  • Target Species: Atlantic salmon, sea trout, steelhead

  • Effective Locations: Atlantic Canada, Scotland, Iceland, Norway

Fishing Notes

  • Fished dead-drifted or swung near bottom — a fly that holds well in fast currents.

  • The Green Frances stands out in darker or peaty rivers where visibility is reduced.

  • Often tied in variations such as Red Frances, Orange Frances, and Black Frances, depending on light and water clarity.

  • Works exceptionally well on Margaree, Miramichi, and Labrador systems during mid to late season.
